Sydney Mayor Clover Moore’s network of CBD cycle paths should be ripped up and a blanket 30km/h speed zone introduced to make the city safer for pedestrians, a City of Sydney councillor urges.
Liberal Edward Mandla’s call for the radical changes comes as Ms Moore pushes for more people to walk around the city.
But Mr Mandla said with 92 per cent of transport movements in the City of Sydney already by foot, and 2 per cent by bike, council was expending too much effort building and promoting unnecessary cycleways. He will move amendments calling for all city centre cycle paths, which he described as “dangerous to everyone”, to be removed, along with imposing a 30km/h CBD speed limit for cars.
