Mention the City of Sydney to the average Sydney sider, and they’ll say isn’t that the “milk crate mob”. Certainly, our approach to public art has made the City of Sydney notorious.
It’s critical in any circumstance that organisations and their leadership learn, grow and change. But in the City of Sydney it appears to be very hard to “teach an old dog new tricks”.
Again, we wheel out the all-knowing “panel of experts” to decide on public art when the real experts are the public themselves. All we have to do is ask them.
You know Russia has a lot of Public Art and monuments. Guess how they’re chosen? By “a panel of experts”.
